Koh Samui is one of the easiest Thai islands for Indian travellers to reach — but it’s not as straightforward as Phuket or Bangkok. Samui has its own airport (USM) with limited direct international connections, so most Indian travellers route through Bangkok and take a short connecting flight. This guide covers the full journey — flights, visa, transfers, currency, SIM cards, and the details that regularly trip up first-time visitors.

Flight Routes from India to Koh Samui

There’s no direct flight from India to Samui. Every route involves at least one connection, almost always through Bangkok. The standard options:

RouteAirlinesTotal travel time
Mumbai → Bangkok → SamuiIndiGo/Air India + Bangkok Airways9–11 hours
Delhi → Bangkok → SamuiAir India/Thai Airways + Bangkok Airways9–11 hours
Bangalore → Bangkok → SamuiIndiGo/Thai Airways + Bangkok Airways8–10 hours
Mumbai → Singapore → SamuiSingapore Airlines + Bangkok Airways10–12 hours
Delhi → Kuala Lumpur → SamuiMalaysia Airlines + Bangkok Airways10–12 hours

The Bangkok Airways monopoly: Bangkok Airways is the only airline that flies directly to Samui, and it operates the airport. This makes flights to Samui more expensive than flights to Phuket or Krabi — typically ₹25,000–₹45,000 round-trip per person from Mumbai or Delhi.

Booking tip

If you can, book the Bangkok → Samui leg on the same PNR as your international flight. Bangkok Airways offers through-checked baggage for partner airlines, but not for all. Separate bookings mean collecting luggage in Bangkok and re-checking — allow 3 hours minimum for the connection.

Visa Requirements for Indian Travellers

Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Thailand. There are three options:

Visa typeCostValidityProcessing
Visa on ArrivalTHB 2,00015 daysAt airport
e-Visa (online)~THB 1,00060 days3–5 working days
Tourist Visa (embassy)~₹2,50060 days5–7 working days

Recommendation: Apply for the e-Visa online before you travel. It’s cheaper, lets you skip the Visa on Arrival queue, and gives you 60 days instead of 15. Apply at thaievisa.go.th.

Note: If you’re routing through Bangkok, you’ll clear Thai immigration at Bangkok, not Samui. Samui’s airport handles only domestic arrivals for most travellers.

Arriving at Samui Airport

Samui International Airport (USM) is unique — it’s an open-air airport with tropical gardens, no indoor terminals in the traditional sense, and golf carts ferrying passengers between buildings. It’s charming but small; the arrival process is quick.

From landing to villa arrival typically takes:

  • 0–15 min: Deplaning, luggage collection
  • 15–45 min: Immigration (10 min) + taxi or villa-arranged pickup
  • 45–60 min: Drive to most villas (Choeng Mon ~10 min, Bophut ~15 min, Chaweng Noi ~20 min)

Total: about an hour from wheels down to villa door. This is one of the fastest airport-to-villa transfers in Southeast Asia.

Airport Transfers

Samui has no Uber or Grab service (unlike Bangkok and Phuket). Options:

  • Villa-arranged pickup — recommended. ShavyStays villas arrange airport transfers on request. Pre-booked, fixed price, villa staff coordinates directly with the driver.
  • Airport taxi — metered but with surcharges. Samui airport taxi to Chaweng ~THB 500–700; to Bophut similar; to Choeng Mon ~THB 400.
  • Private car hire — books in advance through villa or hotel; useful for group arrivals of 6+.

For groups and first-time visitors, we strongly recommend villa-arranged pickup. It removes the taxi-negotiation stress after a 9+ hour journey.

Currency, Cash and Cards

Thailand uses the Thai Baht (THB). Approximate conversion: ₹1 = THB 0.42; THB 1 = ₹2.35.

Samui is more card-friendly than mainland Thailand, but cash is still essential:

  • ATMs: Widely available in Chaweng, Bophut, and near Choeng Mon. Withdrawal fees ~THB 220 per transaction.
  • Cards: Accepted at villa properties, higher-end restaurants, and most shops. Small restaurants and local vendors are cash-only.
  • Currency exchange: Best rates at Thai banks (Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn). Avoid airport exchange — rates are 3–5% worse.
  • What to bring: ₹15,000–₹25,000 per person equivalent for a 4-day trip, unless villa includes meals and activities.

SIM Cards and Connectivity

Thai SIM cards are cheap and easy to buy at the airport or in town:

  • AIS / True / DTAC — three networks; all work well on Samui
  • Cost: ~THB 300–500 for 15–30 days with 15–30GB data
  • Where to buy: Samui airport arrival hall, or 7-Eleven in Chaweng/Bophut
  • eSIM alternative: Airalo or Nomad offer Thailand eSIMs — activate before departure and skip the airport queue

Wi-Fi is universal at villas and most restaurants. For a group trip, one or two Thai SIMs is usually enough — everyone else can hotspot off villa Wi-Fi.

Packing: India-to-Samui Considerations

Samui is tropical year-round (28–33°C). Packing is straightforward, with a few India-specific notes:

  • Lightweight cottons and linens — humidity is high year-round
  • Swimwear — 2 sets if you plan beach + pool days
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — required at marine parks; sold locally at premium prices
  • Light rain jacket — brief afternoon showers Jun–Sep; heavier Oct–Nov
  • Mosquito repellent — bring from India (Thailand’s is weaker)
  • Indian snacks/medicines — not always available; bring a small supply
  • Universal adapter — Thailand uses 220V/50Hz, same as India; no adapter needed for Indian plugs

Indian electrical plugs work directly in Thailand — no adapter required. This is one of the easiest things about travelling there from India.

What to Expect on Arrival

Samui’s villa areas (Chaweng Noi, Bophut, Choeng Mon) are quieter and more residential than Phuket’s Patong or Bangkok’s Sukhumvit. Expect:

  • Smaller roads, less traffic, more space
  • English widely spoken at villas and restaurants, less so at local shops
  • Villas are typically self-contained — you don’t need to leave for meals if you’ve booked chef service
  • Village areas (Fisherman’s Village in Bophut) feel more like a small town than a resort strip
